Mustang is a film which fits into the genre of Social Realism and Drama was released in 2015. It was directed by Deniz Gamez Ergoven.  The film pinpoints a specific spot light on culture and a religion that is not well known in the western world. The film is set in turkey and has completely different culture to western society. With specifically the differences between the sexes and the misogyny. The culture and religion indoctrinates people into believing that girls are an object and a sign of wealth. The film follows 5 girls and there struggles with having to grow up through puberty and having to deal with the constant pressures with not expressing them selves in the way they want. It includes the themes of power, conflict and misogyny.

Power is represented through the uncle in the film. The girl's parents died so they had to be raised up by their uncle and grandmother. Throughout the film the uncle is constantly expressing his power even in the scenes where he is not included. Somehow the men in this culture have inherit privilege and power over women. Which I personally do not agree with. Such scenes where the Uncle exhibits power will be when we comes into confront the girls about playing with the girls. He picks one of the girls up by her hair and hits her. Another scene where the uncle isn't included but power is displayed is the scene where Lale, one of the protagonists, is running around the house with a bra on, playing around with her sisters. The Grand Mother warns the girls "what if you uncle were to see you". The Uncle is feared by the family because of his brutal attitudes. Power is displayed through the family's fear towards the  uncle.

Conflict is shown in the title of the film and subject matter of the film. The subject matter of the film is how everything is run by men and women have little freedom to express them selves but the meaning of the title, Mustang, is a feral horse typically small and lightly built. From the title is opposes the subject matter. Men want women to be submissive not to be wild. The character Lale is the epitome of a mustang. The girl likes football, driving cars and she fits the mustang definition perfectly; she is smaller then any other girl and is lightly built. Lale is one in the end who escapes with one of sisters. Lale is the representation of conflict within this film.

In conclusion this film represents its themes through its characters. The uncle expresses the theme of power and Lale represents conflict.
