71
71 is film directed by Yann Demange. He has also directed top boy the TV series. the film's genre is action, thriller and drama. it is an action because it includes a lot of physical action in the story line. such as chase scenes, physical stunts fights and battles. It is a thriller because the plot revolves around anticipation and suspense and it is a drama because it relies on realistic character and story development. The themes of the film are survival, betrayal, search and rescue and trust. Survival is used through out the film with the protagonist Gary Hook trying to make it through the night. Betrayal is included with the senior officer. search and rescue is what Gary's team is trying to do through out the film and the final theme trust is in the scenes where Gary is in the doctors house. the film in summary is about a young British soldier who accidentally gets left stranded in the streets of Belfast in the year of 1971.
The cinematography I believe is used to create tension and confusion. When the protagonist, Gary, is in non-tense scenes such as where he is playing football with his little brother. The camera is mostly still and not shaky at all. It is when the tension builds and confusion. The scene where the British soldiers are working with the Irish police and setting up a barricade to block any Irish Catholics from harming the Irish police. The camera starts to become very shaky and doesn’t give any clear establishing shot therefore confusing the audience. This scene links beautifully with the performance of the protagonist in this scene. The characters facial expression is confused. His eyebrows are moved down, eyes squinting, frowning and his face his darting back and forth. The shots of Gary's face is enough to give the audience the info that Gary is scared but the shot is to shaky to clear shot of what is going on. It is the reaction off Gary's face that makes the audience scared not what's actually going on.
The performance of the small protestant boy. He is simply named as loyalist child. Has a brilliant performance. Although he is young and very small just as any normal child should be like he is very much like a middle aged man with a heap of power acts. this power is given to him by his father. Well it was given because his father is the head of the protestant group. the little boy exploits that he is his son by bossing round the other gang members to do what he says. An example of this is when Gary and the loyalist child walk up to the protestant barrier and the little child bullies one of the members to give him a drink and Gary a drink. There is a very similar Character in a film called Mediterranea. I think the characters name was Pio. H is a boy who sells and trades random items. He is like an older boy inside but on the exterior he is a young boy. For example he is forces Abas, The protagonist, to give him some cigarettes.
