Impostor is a documentary directed by Bart Layton and was released in 2012. The film is a mix between a feature film and a documentary. It divulges into genres such as thriller and biography. With common conventions found in feature length thriller films such as dark atmosphere, hidden character, mystery and iconography; Fredrick in his hoodie. The narrative the documentary presents is strange; It shows and tells the audience that Fredrick had become Nicholas, supposedly ruining the twist if it was a conventional thriller film. Yet even with this factor conveyed to the audience bluntly it still arrests the viewers with other components such as if the impostor gets caught or found out.
Something I noticed, which I think Bart Layton did, was that everyone was interviewed in a normal interview style; sat down and looking off frame at someone else but the antagonist is looking straight in to lens. Having direct mode address with the audience. This is to place in the room with him, so we can see how persuasive and what makes him tick. It is only later on in the film that I realized why Fredrick is the only one with the close up through out the film. The other characters are given exposition to who they are and where they live but with Fredrick its the other way round; we are not given any explanation to who he is or where he comes from. This affect is mirrored in the continuous close up on Frederick. we are not able to see the space around him making us feel uneasy because of the absence of knowledge to where we are. I believe it is also for representing the character of Frederick, We discover that he actually takes on the persona of over 20 people. So in the end we don't even know if he's telling the truth about who he is. This affect again is why the close up is efficient at its purpose. So the camera set up. It puts us in the same room as the imposter judging him but the same camera angle makes us susceptible to how persuasive he is. We know that he is the bad guy but that does not protect us. There are more shots which stem from this decision. Most of the reconstruction scenes are filmed from first person with the actors looking directly in the lens. Such as the scene where Frederick is in the Orphan home and walking past the hall. Frederick also lip syncs across past and present. Other people we filmed from either above or below but with Frederick we are eye level, the background is a blur and he doesn't even get a title card. The director has done this so that you can experience his persuasiveness. We know that we shouldn't trust on what he says but two thirds of the way through he plays on that; why did the family except him so easily? and weren't the family to accepting? Why else would they accept him? Frederick flips it upside down when he says "They killed him". We are made to look down on the Barkely family by them being so ridiculous and not realizing it's not their kid. The director has chosen some specific components so that we can experience this imposter's persuasiveness.
