Impostor is a documentary directed by Bart Layton and was released in 2012. The film is a mix between a feature film and a documentary. It divulges into genres such as thriller and biography. With common conventions found in feature length thriller films such as dark atmosphere, hidden character, mystery and iconography; Fredrick in his hoodie. The narrative the documentary presents is strange; It shows and tells the audience that Fredrick had become Nicholas, supposedly ruining the twist if it was a conventional thriller film. Yet even with this factor conveyed to the audience bluntly it still arrests the viewers with other components such as if the impostor gets caught or found out.
Something I noticed, which I think Bart Layton did, was that everyone was interviewed in a normal interview style; sat down and looking off frame at someone else but the antagonist is looking straight in to lens. Having direct mode address with the audience. This is to place in the room with him, so we can see how persuasive and what makes him tick. It is only later on in the film that I realized why Fredrick is the only one with the close up through out the film. The other characters are given exposition to who they are and where they live but with Fredrick its the other way round; we are not given any explanation to who he is or where he comes from. This affect is mirrored in the continuous close up on Frederick. we are not able to see the space around him making us feel uneasy because of the absence of knowledge to where we are. I believe it is also for representing the character of Frederick, We discover that he actually takes on the persona of over 20 people. So in the end we don't even know if he's telling the truth about who he is. This affect again is why the close up is efficient at its purpose. So the camera set up. It puts us in the same room as the imposter judging him but the same camera angle makes us susceptible to how persuasive he is. We know that he is the bad guy but that does not protect us. There are more shots which stem from this decision. Most of the reconstruction scenes are filmed from first person with the actors looking directly in the lens. Such as the scene where Frederick is in the Orphan home and walking past the hall. Frederick also lip syncs across past and present. Other people we filmed from either above or below but with Frederick we are eye level, the background is a blur and he doesn't even get a title card. The director has done this so that you can experience his persuasiveness. We know that we shouldn't trust on what he says but two thirds of the way through he plays on that; why did the family except him so easily? and weren't the family to accepting? Why else would they accept him? Frederick flips it upside down when he says "They killed him". We are made to look down on the Barkely family by them being so ridiculous and not realizing it's not their kid. The director has chosen some specific components so that we can experience this imposter's persuasiveness.

"Is It Vital to understand the film's social political context". How far do you agree with that statement in relation to your films?
Key words
Is directed by Fernando Mierelles and Katia Lund. The film fits into the genre of social realism, Thriller and action. The themes of the film are poverty, power and conflict. The film is about Rocket's journey through his home town the city of god and its infestation of gangs and thugs.
- It is important to understand the social political context the director constructs through out the film. There are multiple relations made and broken in the film and if not understood then the audience member will not fully comprehend the character's motives and the development of the plot.

- Such as Lil' Ze's Death. If we didn't know why the kids hated him so much he we would think his death is a nonchalant killing from the kids
- Such as Knock Out Ned. If we didn't know that his brother had died by Lil Ze and his gang, there would be no character development and no reason to why he is fighting for Carrot's gang.
- Such as Otto's story. His father died by Knockout Ned's gun in the bank. Otto's story would be a kid just killing Ned.
There are lots of cases in the City of God where context is needed to understand the reason behind subjects. In the case City Of God social and political understanding is vital.
Rust and Bone
is directed by Jacques Audiard. The film fits into the genre of social realism, drama and romance. Themes include disability, sexuality, power, poverty and conflict. It is about when a girl has her legs amputated and has rediscover her self with a new friend who has loves to fight.
In comparison to City of God it is not vital to understand the social political context because this film is about the affects which the themes have on the characters.
In comparison to City of God it is not vital to understand the social political context because this film is about the affects which the themes have on the characters.
- Such as in the character Stephanie- She has an accident with a whale at sea world and has to have legs amputated thus causing her lose her ability to walk but more importantly her ability to dance.
- We do not need to know how she lost her legs because this film is about affects that loosing her legs has.
- Such as with the character of Ali it was not vital to understand he fought and did other shady jobs. We know from where ever he was, he was poor. But we did not need to know why he was poor because this character's story, just like Stephanie , was about the affects of being poor.
This film in summary is prominently about affects of the social and political context. we are given context to why Stephanie is disabled but it is superfluous and with Ali's context is given to us, to why he is poor, but again it's not needed.
I agree and disagree with this statement because it depends on what the film's message is about. Rust and Bones context isn't needed because it is about the affects which are conflicted by the characters yet with City of God it is needed because it wanted to show you a story.

City of god was directed by Cicade De Deus and was made in the year of 2002. The film covers the story of a boy who who grown up in the favellas of Rio, specifically the fevella called the city of god. This involves the genre of social realism, thriller and action. It has a circular narrative with it starting with one of the protagonists walking into a street encountering Lil' Ze's gang and the police. The Film then takes us back through time to the first protagonist we met (Rocket) but when he was younger, by the camera moving around Rocket in a circle. This circular movement with the camera mirrors the film's circle narrative. Within the film there are many seamless transitions such as when Shaggy dies and Rocket walks away and the truck passes to reveal rocket and his friend in future standing in the same place where the truck had once passed him and the story to how Carrot became the owner to one of his drug houses. The reason to why the transitions are so seamless is because there our no jump cuts and sound is placed neatly over them so that it diverts the attention from the picture cutting. The edits are also covered with story telling by Rocket. He gives ample exposition and enables the audience to be fully engaged in the piece of film. This is the reason to why the edits between chapters of the film are so flawless and beautiful. The voice over from Rocket, The sound of the cut and the lack of jump cuts.
This film creates the themes of conflict, power and poverty. It creates poverty very simply by using the mes en scene on all the characters and places. All character's clothing are very tattered and would be commonly associated with poor lower class. The building, streets, shops, houses and everything around the characters is dilapidated emphasizing the poverty stricken environment this film is set in. Conflict is an on going theme in the film. From the beginning we have the chicken causing Lil' Ze's gang to cause chaos in the streets, Lil' Ze wanting the football, the tender trio robbing the truck and so on. The conflict is copious and doesn't even cease at the end with the kids (The Runts) shooting Lil'Ze and walking away playfully. Maybe the director was trying to display a metaphor that conflict is ever lasting and that there'll never be a world with out conflict. Reading deeper into this maybe that even if we think there is harmony within the favella, there's not because someone always wants more. It's in human nature to want more and with the poverty impoverished environment this is increased thus leading to gangs, thievery, drugs and crime. Power rests in the hand's of someone who can manipulate the vulnerable and poor to there own bidding. These hand's belong to Lil' Ze. He uses his inhuman emotions or absence of emotions to kill thus leading to using scaremongering tactics to instruct people. These people have little power and wealth consequently having little security to their lives therefore they have to leave their security in the hands of someone who does have power and wealth and that someone happens to be Lil' Ze. This vast amount of power Lil' Ze obtains ergo drives other gangs and/or individuals to conflict with Lil' Ze. The three themes link seamlessly which is very much like the micro features do in the film.
The story and the micro features both complement each other in a smooth and an unwrinkled fashion. It was very successful with conveying its themes through the linkages between them. The micro features allowed the film in a very fundamental method to present the messages.

10 Clover Field Lane is directed by Dan Tatchtenberg. It was released in 2016 and fits into the genre of Psychological thriller and sci fi. It is about a dystopian future where aliens are trying to take over, what seems, the world and a man's obsession with a girl named Megan.
This film is a sequel or a type of cousin to the film Clover field. But the film is more than just a simple sci fi it includes subjects which are enigmatic and convoluted. The plot covers a woman's journey through where she thinks that she is supposedly rescued by this man named Howard. Howard is an introverted conspiracist who is obsessed with the ideology which involves that aliens are taking over the world and there have been widespread chemical attacks to try and capture and kill people. The woman doesn't believe Howard at first but when faced with the harsh reality, encountering a woman beyond the shelter door with blistering and burnt skin, she then decides to live in the shelter. There is another man named Emmet who ran into the chamber when it was first built. The woman and Emmet become friends and start finding things out about Howard, the shelter and its previous occupants. Emmet and the woman uncover the truth about Howard and the previous occupants thus leading them to constructing an elaborate plan to escape because going out to the infested alien world is better than staying with Howard in his shelter.
The film establishes a theme of subjective reality. This is shown through the woman. To her she had a car crash and was captured by this man who run her down. But to the man, Howard, he found a replacement to his obsession with his dead daughter Megan. Howard's wife had left him because he couldn't get over the death of his daughter. Howard then becoming a recluse and building these fantasies in his head to oppress the memory of his daughter but one of these fantasies was actually real. With the fantasy being an actuality Howard became further obsessed with the truth, which was that aliens are trying to take over the world and are chemically attacking the earth capture and kill humans. To the woman she had her own reality that there were no aliens and life was societally normal. But when her reality is tested by Howard's, she doesn't know what to believe. It is only towards the end she knows what to believe. Emmet's reality is what ever he is told. He is used as a tool to represent the audience and how the audience is torn between Howard and the woman with what to believe. It is only till a certain occurrence to do with the three of them that the audience have to make there own decision up to what reality they need to believe.

Rust and Bone
Rust and Bone is directed by Jacques Audiard and made in 2012. The film fits into the genre of romance and social realism. The two protagonists Stephanie and Ali meet in a night club. Ali finds a belonging in Stephanie. Initially Ali uses Stephanie as a means of instant gratification and Stephanie uses Ali for movement use, with her legs now being amputated from the accident but further on in the film the couple start having sex and feeling for each other. The themes of the film include Sexuality, disability, power, poverty and conflict.
Stephanie was a whale trainer in the local sea world. A fatal accident occurs when a whale crashes into the main podium causing the stage to collapse on to many of the whale trainers. Resulting from this Stephanie has to get her legs amputated. Stephanie was an avid dancer in the local night club and enjoyed attracting males and having the power to reject which she did numerous times. This links to, why she loved training whales; Stephanie relishes in having power and control but now that she looses her job and her ability to dance she finds her self incompetent and powerless thus creating the theme of power.
Stephanie rediscovers her sexuality and power through the other protagonist Ali. Ali is an immigrant from Belgium who has lived in poverty all his life. Ali in the film has moved in with his sister Anna and has brought his son so that they start a new life. Poverty is shown through the initial scene in which Sam, Ali's son, and Ali are on their way to his sister's house on the train. Ali is hunting for food and left overs so that they can eat, he searches through bins and toilets for food. This exhibits the audience right from the beginning that they are poor. Other identifications of poverty is Anna's home and job. Anna works in a super market as a cashier and sells dogs she finds on the street. Ali has to find night shifts as a security guard and a a bouncer. Ali also has fights illegally to win money and this is where Stephanie rediscovers her power. Stephanie becomes Ali's manager and has to deal with collecting the money from the men or "monsters" who bet. Whilst she collects the money the other men look at her in shock. "A woman collecting our money". Stephanie adores this feeling, she feels like she is back in charge and has re-spawned her power and control. Another example of power is in one of the fights Ali is loosing and is close to being unconscious but this changes when he sees the feet of Stephanie walking toward him. Seeing the feet he shouts in to the air and flips the guy on the floor and punches him wildly. Ali soon wins the fight. This fight was only won by the power which Stephanie gave to Ali. Ali, just by seeing her feet and obtains a ridiculous amount of strength.
In conclusion this displays and manifests its themes very succesfully and through the mes en scene and performance it exhibits its main themes.

Weekly Film
Angus,Thongs and perfect snogging is directed by Gurinda Chadha and was released in 2008. The film fits into the hybrid genre of comedy and drama. It involves themes of sexuality, love and relationships.
Sexuality is an obvious theme within it being in the title of the film "Perfect Snogging". The girls are fascinated by this new subject in which seems so close to obtain with the new boys; Robbie and Tom in school, but are so far from it because of the puerile nature and inexperience in the subject. This is evident in the 10 stages of snogging georgia and her best friends come up with.
With sex comes love or false love. I believe the girl Jas is a brilliant example of this. Jas is Georgia's best friend and a third way through the film Jas gets the new boy's, Tom's, phone number. Jas obtaining the phone number starts talking to Tom and then soon becomes close to him. They engage in numerous sexual activities such as kissing and snogging. Jas grows this so called feeling of love to Tom when in fact she's actually growing a feeling of love to these new sexual discoveries who just so happen to be with Tom.
Relationships can be evident in the family scenes. Specifically the scenes with the father leaving to New Zealand and Georgia thinking initially she'll be ok but once feeling the strain of loosing friends she changes into being lonely. Georgia learns the importance of family and friends over rules the importance sex.
These three themes link pleasantly together to construct the over all theme of coming of age. Relating to the societal agreement that with age comes wisdom and prudence. Georgia has experienced, with age, societal key factors which lead to a mature life. Accepting that relationships, friendships and family comes before sex.
Maybe a deeper reason to why there is these three main themes is to indoctrinate the film's audience, which happens to be young girls, into society with the ideas and beliefs which are held by the hegemony or in these times the white, male with high income. To condition girls to make them believe that family and friendship ,but mainly family, is the global goal for a girl to have. To position them lower than boys in the societal hierarchy.
