My Brother The Devil
My Brother The Devil Is a film directed by sally el Hosaini. The film was made in 2012 and is about two teenage Arab brothers. who face the everyday prejudices head on if they are to survive the British gang land they live in. The films genre is social realism and drama. The film is a social realism because it puts a spot on the lives of two young Arab teen boys and views them to see what they do in their every day lives. A drama relies heavily on real life situations and realistic character development. there is character development and real life situation through out this film. real life situations such as when the electricity runs out and the boys top up their mums purse with their own money.
I believe that the two most important micro features in the film were mes en scene and performance. Mes en scene was very visually striking at the beginning. The colour was very impacting with colors such as bright pink and light blue worn by the boys on their t shirts. The colours on the buildings, walls, road and market were all very bright. But as the Film goes on the colour gets darker and darker. the colours are not as visually impacting as before. For example when the little brother Mo find Rashid is gay the color of the walls, floor, bed and doors are very dark. This change in colour is to represent that the brothers relationship is becoming worse and worse as time goes on. In the final scene where Mo and Rashid meet up the colours are so much more vibrant and much more visually impacting. Therefore showing that the brothers relationship has been resolved and all is well.
The performance is also what sells it for me. There is a particular movement from the older brother Rashid when ever he is with Mo which I find interesting. Rashid puts his hand on Mo's head. I believe that this is to show to the audience that Rashid is always there to protect and the amount of times he does this shows that he is always looking after him. In the final scene Rashid puts his hand Mo's head to show that he still loves hi and cares for him even through the trouble and hard ship they have went through. The proxemics between the two brothers and constant wrestling or fighting shows and tells the audience that they are close and have been raised up close. This then gives futher information on how they were raised and why they were raised up this way. They are close because they had to share a room, They had to share a room because there parents do not earn that much income therefore have to buy a two bedroom flat. This relationship shows and tells the audience that they are lower working class family with a small apartment.
In conclusion I love this film because it shows the difficulties that this class has to deal with them. From the worst dilemmas to the simplest. Such as saving his brother from being shot and paying the electric meter. It conveys the brothers relationship beautifully through the two micro features performance and mes en scene.
