Rust and Bone
Rust and Bone is directed by Jacques Audiard and made in 2012. The film fits into the genre of romance and social realism. The two protagonists Stephanie and Ali meet in a night club. Ali finds a belonging in Stephanie. Initially Ali uses Stephanie as a means of instant gratification and Stephanie uses Ali for movement use, with her legs now being amputated from the accident but further on in the film the couple start having sex and feeling for each other. The themes of the film include Sexuality, disability, power, poverty and conflict.
Stephanie was a whale trainer in the local sea world. A fatal accident occurs when a whale crashes into the main podium causing the stage to collapse on to many of the whale trainers. Resulting from this Stephanie has to get her legs amputated. Stephanie was an avid dancer in the local night club and enjoyed attracting males and having the power to reject which she did numerous times. This links to, why she loved training whales; Stephanie relishes in having power and control but now that she looses her job and her ability to dance she finds her self incompetent and powerless thus creating the theme of power.
Stephanie rediscovers her sexuality and power through the other protagonist Ali. Ali is an immigrant from Belgium who has lived in poverty all his life. Ali in the film has moved in with his sister Anna and has brought his son so that they start a new life. Poverty is shown through the initial scene in which Sam, Ali's son, and Ali are on their way to his sister's house on the train. Ali is hunting for food and left overs so that they can eat, he searches through bins and toilets for food. This exhibits the audience right from the beginning that they are poor. Other identifications of poverty is Anna's home and job. Anna works in a super market as a cashier and sells dogs she finds on the street. Ali has to find night shifts as a security guard and a a bouncer. Ali also has fights illegally to win money and this is where Stephanie rediscovers her power. Stephanie becomes Ali's manager and has to deal with collecting the money from the men or "monsters" who bet. Whilst she collects the money the other men look at her in shock. "A woman collecting our money". Stephanie adores this feeling, she feels like she is back in charge and has re-spawned her power and control. Another example of power is in one of the fights Ali is loosing and is close to being unconscious but this changes when he sees the feet of Stephanie walking toward him. Seeing the feet he shouts in to the air and flips the guy on the floor and punches him wildly. Ali soon wins the fight. This fight was only won by the power which Stephanie gave to Ali. Ali, just by seeing her feet and obtains a ridiculous amount of strength.
In conclusion this displays and manifests its themes very succesfully and through the mes en scene and performance it exhibits its main themes.
