"Is It Vital to understand the film's social political context". How far do you agree with that statement in relation to your films?
Key words
  • Social
  • Political
  • What extent
  • Undertsand
  • Does it mean in real life or does it mean the life in the film?
City of God
Is directed by Fernando Mierelles and Katia Lund. The film fits into the genre of social realism, Thriller and action. The themes of the film are poverty, power and conflict. The film is about Rocket's journey through his home town the city of god and its infestation of gangs and thugs.

- It is important to understand the social political context the director constructs through out the film. There are multiple relations made and broken in the film and if not understood then the audience member will not fully comprehend the character's motives and the development of the plot.

  • Such as Lil' Ze's Death. If we didn't know why the kids hated him so much he we would think his death is a nonchalant killing from the kids
  • Such as Knock Out Ned. If we didn't know that his brother had died by Lil Ze and his gang, there would be no character development and no reason to why he is fighting for Carrot's gang.
  • Such as Otto's story. His father died by Knockout Ned's gun in the bank. Otto's story would be a kid just killing Ned.
There are lots of cases in the City of God where context is needed to understand the reason behind subjects. In the case City Of God social and political understanding is vital.

Rust and Bone
is directed by Jacques Audiard. The film fits into the genre of social realism, drama and romance. Themes include disability, sexuality, power, poverty and conflict. It is about when a girl has her legs amputated and has rediscover her self with a new friend who has loves to fight.

In comparison to City of God it is not vital to understand the social political context because this film is about the affects which the themes have on the characters.

  • Such as in the character Stephanie- She has an accident with a whale at sea world and has to have legs amputated thus causing her lose her ability to walk but more importantly her ability to dance.
  • We do not need to know how she lost her legs because this film is about affects that loosing her legs has.
  • Such as with the character of Ali it was not vital to understand he fought and did other shady jobs. We know from where ever he was, he was poor. But we did not need to know why he was poor because this character's story, just like Stephanie , was about the affects of being poor.
This film in summary is prominently about affects of the social and political context. we are given context to why Stephanie is disabled but it is superfluous and with Ali's context is given to us, to why he is poor, but again it's not needed.

I agree and disagree with this statement because it depends on what the film's message is about. Rust and Bones context isn't needed because it is about the affects which are conflicted by the characters yet with City of God it is needed because it wanted to show you a story.
