Angus,Thongs and perfect snogging is directed by Gurinda Chadha and was released in 2008. The film fits into the hybrid genre of comedy and drama. It involves themes of sexuality, love and relationships.
Sexuality is an obvious theme within it being in the title of the film "Perfect Snogging". The girls are fascinated by this new subject in which seems so close to obtain with the new boys; Robbie and Tom in school, but are so far from it because of the puerile nature and inexperience in the subject. This is evident in the 10 stages of snogging georgia and her best friends come up with.
With sex comes love or false love. I believe the girl Jas is a brilliant example of this. Jas is Georgia's best friend and a third way through the film Jas gets the new boy's, Tom's, phone number. Jas obtaining the phone number starts talking to Tom and then soon becomes close to him. They engage in numerous sexual activities such as kissing and snogging. Jas grows this so called feeling of love to Tom when in fact she's actually growing a feeling of love to these new sexual discoveries who just so happen to be with Tom.
Relationships can be evident in the family scenes. Specifically the scenes with the father leaving to New Zealand and Georgia thinking initially she'll be ok but once feeling the strain of loosing friends she changes into being lonely. Georgia learns the importance of family and friends over rules the importance sex.
These three themes link pleasantly together to construct the over all theme of coming of age. Relating to the societal agreement that with age comes wisdom and prudence. Georgia has experienced, with age, societal key factors which lead to a mature life. Accepting that relationships, friendships and family comes before sex.
Maybe a deeper reason to why there is these three main themes is to indoctrinate the film's audience, which happens to be young girls, into society with the ideas and beliefs which are held by the hegemony or in these times the white, male with high income. To condition girls to make them believe that family and friendship ,but mainly family, is the global goal for a girl to have. To position them lower than boys in the societal hierarchy.
